Getting Started with PrintRule

Learn how to install the PrintRule Agent, connect your printers, and print your first barcode label from Shopify in under 5 minutes.

What you'll need

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • A Shopify store (any plan)
  • A computer connected to your printers (Windows or Mac)
  • At least one printer (Dymo, Zebra, Brother, or any standard printer)

Step 1: Install the PrintRule app

Head to the Shopify App Store and search for PrintRule, or use the direct install link from our website. Click Install and approve the permissions.

Step 2: Download the PrintRule Agent

Once the app is installed, you'll see a prompt to download the PrintRule Agent. This is a small application that runs on your computer and connects your local printers to Shopify.

Download it, run the installer, and sign in with your Shopify store.

Step 3: Connect your printers

The Agent automatically discovers all printers connected to your computer — USB, network, and Bluetooth. You'll see them listed in the PrintRule dashboard inside Shopify Admin.

Give each printer a friendly name (e.g., "Warehouse Dymo" or "Office Laser") so you can easily target them with rules later.

Step 4: Print your first label

Navigate to any product in your Shopify Admin, click More Actions, and choose Print with PrintRule. Select a template, pick your printer, and hit Print.

That's it. Your first label should appear from your printer in seconds.
